Over the years, we have collected the following frequently asked questions regarding Manila for web pages. here they are, in no particular order:

Question: How do I get a Manila web page?

Answer: Come to a Manila workshop at ESU 10! See all our workshops and register on ODIE! Or send us your request.

Question: How do I create my own Manila theme?

Answer: Come to the Manila Template Workshop, see ODIE for details!

Question: I forgot my password, now what??

Answer: Click on the Login link on your page. Enter your email address and leave the password field blank. Click the Login button and our Manila server will email you your password.

Question: How do I change my password?

Answer: After logging in to your Manila site add a /member/changePassword to the URL. You will be prompted for the old password and then you can choose a new password, enter that in twice, and click Change Password.

Registration Information
During this full-day workshop, participants will use Manila to develop an educational web site. Topics include creating web pages, inserting hyperlinks, clipart, and pictures, as well as lesson plans and materials used for their curriculum.

Manila II
Registration Information
During this full-day workshop, participants will further develop their educational web site using Manila, adding more material and other multimedia features that will enhance their web site, such as audio, video clips, calendar, current date, print-friendly links, etc.

Manila III
Registration Information
Participants of this workshop will learn how to enhance their Manila web site using digital images, audio and movie files. PhotoShop Elements will be used to prepare the digital images for use on teacher web pages. They will also explore other resources on the Internet to jazz up their site.

Multimedia gives us and extraordinary opportunity to engage our audience, whether that be students, parents, or any others. Being able to provide a photo gallery of last weeks field trip, or a video of the skit you prepared so grandma could see it. When you put in an email address or web address, Manila automatically creates a link for this. There may be times when you don't need or want a link to be present but you still want to display the address.

To stop Manila from creating an email link, you need to include a \ before the @ sign.
Example: jdoe\@esu10.org
Manila Output: jdoe@esu10.org

To stop Manila from creating a web link, add a \ before the two // in the URL.
Example: http:\//teachers.esu10.org
Manila Output: http://teachers.esu10.org

RSS Feeds

Manila has the built-in ability to accept RSS (Real Simple Syndication) streams. These streams are posts made by others such as news and other information updated on a regular basis. Here is a list of RSS streams that you can use on your page.

To use this feature use the following macro in your story, replacing the URL with that listed with the "XML box" on the list of RSS streams page (either right click the box or click and hold until a menu comes up an you can copy the link to the clipboard... then paste the link in to the macro):

Using Tables for a Photo Gallery

In this example, I have used tables to organize the layout of the photo gallery. A note before you start your gallery - Before uploading the pictures, make sure they are all the same dimensions. For example, all the pictures used in this gallery are 175 pixels tall by 175 pixels wide. This adds consistency and makes the page look cohesive.
1) Prepare your pictures for the web - save as jpg or gif, consider dimensions, consider file size.
2) Upload your images to the Pictures Editor's Only menu in Manila.
3) Create a new story for your photo gallery.
4) Create tables depending on how many photos you have. You may want 2x2 tables as I have created in the example below or 3x2 if you want 3 photos across. Use separate tables for each row of pictures. This will help visually with page layout and organization of the pictures and captions. Add the picture shortcuts and captions to the tables. Do any other modifications such as centering the pictures and text within each cell and centering the tables on the page.
5) Post your changes.

Other hints to consider when creating a web photo gallery.

Removing a table borderSometimes you don≠t want the border to show on the table. To do this you will need to enter the html source code view. This is sometimes a little scary, especially if you have never looked at it. I use a trick to help me locate information within source code. Try entering in text that will help you recognize where in the code you need something changed. For example, I will type a row of x's across the editing page so I know when I read the code to look for the x's.

Next, click on the "View HTML Source" option in the lower left corner of the editing window. In this view, you should be able to locate the x's you typed earlier. This tells us where the beginning of the table starts. If you read a little beyond the x's, you will see a section that starts with "<table". Shortly after this, you will read border="1". If you change this to border="0", this will remove the border of the table. The last step is MAKE SURE you uncheck the "View HTML Source" option before posting your changes!!! If you don≠t do this step, you will end up posting the source code as your web page and not the contents you intended.Adding a horizontal ruleA horizontal rule is just a line divider that spans the web page. It is a nice feature to use when you need to separate the page content. The process is a lot like removing the border of a table. You will need to dive in to the code to add a horizontal rule in Manila. In the Manila editor, enter in a series of x≠s where you want your horizontal rule to appear. Check the "View HTML Source" box and look for the x's. Replace the series of x's with "<hr>" without the quotes. Some other options you may want to try for the hr tag: <hr color="blue"> - changes the line color to blue.
<hr color="blue" width="400> - forces the line to a width of 400 pixels across the page.
<hr color="blue" align="center" width="400"> - centers the line.
<hr color="blue" align="center" width="75%"> - create a dynamic line length of 75% of the width of the web page window.Again, MAKE SURE you uncheck the "View HTML Source" box before posting your changes!!

Photo text wrapping

You may want to insert a photo on your page and have text wrap around either the left side of the picture or the right side. In the Manila editing window, type:
{pictureRef("imagename", align:right)} Replace imagename with the shortcut name for your image. This macro places the image to the justification you choose (i.e.: left or right). Other variables you can add to this macro are the horizontal space and vertical space options. The text or content of the page will often butt right up next to the photo and it would be nice to have some white space between these. Use the following to add 10 pixels of white space around the whole image:

Password in Sign Out Box

Once you are logged in, choose Prefs from the Editor's Only menu. Choose Advanced. Click on or scroll down to "Sign Out Members Box". Add the following code:

Change "yourSite" to the name of your manila site. Submit your changes.

Macro Examples

Manila has many options for having dynamic information posted directly on your web page. One of these options is using macros. Manila intreprets anything in {braces} as a macro. Here is a list of a few macros that you may wish to use in your page.

Image Macros

{pictureRef("Computer", align: right)} - This macro places the image to the justification you choose (ie: left, or right). Text will wrap around the image if using left or right justification. (Replace "Computer" with the shortcut of your image in quotes.)

{pictureLink ("lineText", "shortcutName")} - Generate a link to a picture.

Date & Time Macros

{day} - Display the number of the current day.
Example Output: 26

{dayName} - Display the name of the current day.
Example Output: Monday

{lastUpdate} - Display the date and time a page was last updated.
Example Output: 4/27/04; 3:00:46 PM

{lastUpdateString} - Display the date and time a page was last updated, using a friendly format.
Example Output: Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at 3:00:46 PM

{month} - Display the number of the current month.
Example Output: 2

{monthName} - Display the name of the current month.
Example Output: February

{now} - Display the current time and date on the server.
Example Output: 2/26/07; 11:24:49 AM

{postTime} - Display the time and date when the page was orignially posted.
Example Output: 4/30/03; 10:22:04 AM

{year} - Display the number of the current year.
Example Output: 2007

Other Useful Macros

{printFriendlyLink("Print This Story")} - Display a page suitable for printing.
Example Output: Print This Story {mailStory ("Mail This Story")} - Display a page allowing you to email the story to an email account.
Example Output: Mail This Story {glossSub ("Your Shortcut", "Text to display")} - Link to a page in the shortcuts list, but use text other than the title of the shortcut. - You can also use it to open a new window for the link. See second example.

Getting Site Stats

Hourly Hits - Hits by the hour that they occured
Members - List of members on your site. Note: you can only get this list if you are logged in to the site.
Most Read Messages - List of your stories ordered by hit count.
Referers - List of sites that have links to you.
